Cheering up the coldest season
Even though the defining nature of the winter is the lack of light, Extremadura traditions fill these months with colourful festivities.
The winter time in Extremadura is studded with cultural and artistic festivities which are not to be missed. We recommend a visit to Acehúche de las Carantoñas, or Piorna, where Jarramplas takes place. Two festivities which are characteristic of this season and in which the whole population takes part.
But neither should you miss the Encamisá de Torrejoncillo; Las Candelas, in Alendralejo; the San Antón Race, in Navalvillar de Pela; Los Negritos de San Blas, in Montehermoso; Carnival in Badajoz, Campo Arañuelo, Navalmoral de la Mata or the Peropalo in Villanueva de la Vera, amongst many other celebrations.
Nevertheless, the winter months are also the perfect time for outdoor activities where you can discover the natural wealth of this community. For this, you simply must see the Chorro de la Miancera waterfalls, in El Gasco, as well as those of Los Ángeles and El Chorrituelo in Ovejuela, Nogaleras in Navaconcejo, Caozo in Piornal, Chorrera de Hervás or La Cascada del Diablo (The Devil's Waterfall), in Villanueva de la Vera. In addition, we recommend you to take one of the routes in the Valle del Jerte at this time of the year, such as that of the Garganta de los Infiernos.
