This protected area offers activities, culture and gastronomy to spend a few unforgettable days as a family.

In the south-west of the province of Cáceres you will find one of the best natural spaces for an unforgettable family holiday: Tagus International Transnational Natural Reserve.

This natural space combines nature, culture, history and cuisine and include 12 municipalities in the province of Cáceres, Spain, and 14 freguesías in Portugal. Within its limits there are other protected areas such as the Tagus International Natural Park, the Sierra de San Pedro Site of Regional Interest, several Special Protection Areas for Birds and Special Area of Conservation (SAC) which are included in the Natural 2000 Network.

You can discover the charm of the Natural Park by completing one of its most all-encompassing routes: the Bridge Route starts and ends at the Roman bridge in Alcántara and travels along the area’s typical landscape, rich in heritage. Alternatively, you may do the Montón de Trigo Route, which starts in Zarza la Mayor and ends in the Erja river. It is a short but intense route, since it crosses several different ecosystems and allows to observe large birds of prey, such as griffon vultures and Bonelli’s eagles.

In the Centre for Interpretation of Tagus International in Alcántara you will be able to discover wildlife though games. Besides, specialist guides shall provide you with information and give you advice on the most convenient routes to take, depending on your age and interest.

There are many paths to travel this site on foot, by bike, on horseback and even by boat, allowing to get to known the Tagus with its riverside woods and its environments from an unusual perspective. Prepare to be surprised by unexpected forms of wildlife, such as autochthonous crabs, black storks, otters or Spanish irises.

Tagus International will make you feel the excitement of new experiences in direct contact with earth, water and air. A visit to the dolmen ensembles in Valencia de Alcántara, Santiago de Alcántara, Cedillo, Herrera de Alcántara and Alcántara are a travel into the distant past; if you wish to know more, do not hesitate to visit the Centre for Interpretation of Dolmen Culture in Santiago de Alcántara. You can even experience the magic of travelling in an hot-air balloon and enjoying a spectacular 360º panorama. You can also practice a wide range of sports including kitesurf, windsurf, wakeboard, kneeboard, water ski, paddle surf, climbing or rappel. Or know more about the process of making hams, cured meats, cheeses and oil by visiting agritourism farms and oil mills.
