  • In the medieval centre of the town stands the Church Cathedral of Santa Maria, an architectural expression with a clear predominance of Gothic art.

The Cathedral of Santa María in Cáceres is a late Gothic construction that was renovated in the 15th and16th centuries. Located in the square of the same name, it has held the rank of church cathedral since 1957.

The outside is a typically sober example of Spanish medieval architecture. Initially it was Romanesque style, but now only some traces of its transition to Gothic style remain, and one can appreciate Renaissance features in the tower and the choir. In one of its corners, at ground level, there is a sculpture of San Pedro de Alcántara.

Inside the church is divided up into three naves and the belltower. Go up the spiral staircase and you will be able to enjoy one of the best views of the city and above all, the monumental centre of Cáceres.

Inside the cathedral you will also find vestiges of the town's nobility, whose coats of arms can be seen on the flagstones.

Some of the more noteworthy artworks are the altarpieces, such as the one in the chapel of Miguel, the figure of the "Cristo Negro", or Black Christ, in what was the Blázquez family chapel, the Cristo de las Batallas or Christ of the Battles, which stands beside the choir and the Cristo del Refugio, or Christ of Refuge, from the convent of San Francisco.

On your trip to the church cathedral you can also visit the museum of sacred art it houses.
