Mirabel Estate

The Mirabel Estate is situated between the valleys of El Infierno and Valdegracia and is surrounded by dense woods of chestnut trees. This palace is well worth a visit, for example, if you are taking one of the routes which pass nearby, the Hermitages hiking route or the Queen Isabel la Católica route, since it has been a Cultural Heritage Site and National Heritage Site since 1931. However, as it is a privately owned building it can only be visited each 3 May, when the Romería de la Cruz takes place. So don't forget to include it in your travel planner.

Its construction dates from the 14th century and it was rebuilt in 1486 as a resting place for the Catholic Monarchs and their children. It is about 7 kilometres from Guadalupe. At that time it belonged to the monks in the monastery, until the time of the Expropriation when it fell into the hands of the Marquess of the Romana.

The Mudejar can be appreciated in every corner of this building, which has only one floor and a number of attractive courtyards, fountains, terraces and gardens for resting in. Perhaps the most important is the "Fuente del Frío", in which there is a verraco (granite megalithic sculpture) which is thought to be of Iberian origin.

Another of the important rooms is the Magdalena chapel, which still has Flamenco frescos and just underneath you will find the Cristo de Mirabel chapel. There you can see a Baroque altarpiece, which includes a canvas of the Descent from the Cross which is believed to be from Rubens school, and at the base of which you will find the Recumbent Christ by Mirabel, after whom the estate is named.
