In the middle of the countryside and bathed by the Zújar River, we find Monterrubio de la Serena, in the province of Badajoz.
Vast olive groves surrounding the town are the first thing you see when you get to Monterrubio. The fields are also full of traditional brick buildings and ancestral homes.
As for religious architecture, there are two main buildings. The first one is the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Consolación, erected in the 16th century, in the centre of the old town, with a combination of styles between Gothic and Mudejar. The second one is the Shrine of Los Cuarenta Mártires, situated on the outskirts of the town, with traditional features. If you travel a little further you'll come across the Shrine of San Isidro, situated in a beautiful natural spot.
This municipality is known for its gastronomy and production of high quality natural products, including cheese, wine, ham and, of course, extra virgin olive oil protected by a designation of origin (DO). Monterrubio de la Serena. -
