Next to the town of Reina, this fortress was built by the Moslems and inherited by the Christians, becoming a part of the Order of Santiago.
Reina Castle belongs to the municipality of Reina in Badajoz and stands on a hill from which it controls the town. It is classified as a citadel.
The fortification was built during the Moslem period, making use of the remains of old Roman townships which had been inhabited on this site under the name of Regina Turdulorum.
Ferdinand III later donated the town of Reina and its castle to the Order of Santiago, until it was abandoned between the years 1604 and 1738.
Only a few remains have been preserved today, but the castle was a great fortress comprising a walled enclosure in which there were fourteen independent towers. The most prominent of the towers is the keep and several water cisterns still remain. In the interior there was also a 15th century Visigothic hermitage, of which a good part of the building still remains.
The unique nature and importance of this castle led to its declaration as a monument of Historic and Artistic Interest. -
