One of the most important relics in Cáceres is concealed inside the chapel found ins the Palace of the Dukes of Abrantes, the "Lignum Crucis".
The 16th-century Palace of the Dukes of Abrantes is located in the Plaza del Duque, outside the city walls of Cáceres.
From the outside one can see an austere building with Gothic elements, outstandingly a defence tower with a large machicolation; the doorway is formed by a semicircular archway with voussoirs and a coat of arms at the top.
Inside the palace is the chapel of the Excomunión or the "Lignum Crucis", in which the relic can be found - a tiny fragment of the cross Christ died on, the Lignum Crucis. The chapel is open for worship three days a year, when as well as attending the service, one can visit the relic.
Nowadays it is used as a hall of residence for women students run by the Hijas del Cristo Rey nuns.
