The hamlet of Villarreal de San Carlos, belonging to Serradilla, enjoys a privileged location in an incredibly beautiful spot.
Set in Monfragüe National Park we find the small hamlet of Villarreal de San Carlos, in the province of Cáceres. It was established by Charles III to protect travellers from bandits on their way from Plasencia to Trujillo.
In the centre of the small municipality we find the Church of Nuestra Señora del Socorro, which houses the image of the Virgin of La Merced, also called Perpetuo Socorro.
Its main attraction is that Villarreal de San Carlos is situated in Monfragüe National Park, which is a paradise for birdwatchers and has interesting flora and fauna. Some of the native species in the park include the imperial eagle, black vulture, black stork and griffon vulture.
Villarreal de San Carlos hosts the Extremadura International Ornithology Tourism Fair (FIO) every year. It is an important national and international birdwatching event for individuals and companies. -
